Wildlife haven Tasmania Bruny Island

Tasmania is a wildlife haven. Whales that were not seen for long periods in this area have returned to breed.

If you are traveling from Hobart, it will take an hour before reaching Kettering Pier. Bruny island is a 15-minute boat ride away. joojourneys_ketteringpierKettering

Check out the timetable in the link!

joojourneys_brunyisland_cars_crossing如果游客选择开车,也可以直接乘船渡河(非旺季30澳币),非常方便。选择步行的朋友则免费乘搭渡轮,太棒了!joojourneys_brunyisland_kettering_one一片净土,在雾散后在我们眼前出现,象风景画一样。

Tasmania in winter can be cold and rainy with an average temperature of 4 – 12 degree Celsius.

To survive Bruny island, please bring along waterproof thick jackets, a scarf or beanie (whichever works for you, or both). The winds can be really chilly.

The Bruny Island Wildlife Cruise brings you close to the coastal wildlife such as the Australian fur seals and Black-faced Cormorants.

Before the cruise, the guides will brief you on safety, and pass out red waterproof coats for all passengers. This is absolutely necessary as you are in for a wet and wild ride during the wintery month of July. For passengers who are prone to motion-sickness, it’s advisable to grab some pills before going on the cruise. joojourneys_brunyisland_cruisecoatjoojourneys_brunyisland_cruise出发咯!

joojourneys_brunyisland_tourguide据导游介绍,上千只的雄海豹聚集在岩石壁。

The Australian fur seal is the largest fur seal found in Australia waters. They are cousins of the South African seals but there seems to be no history of interaction between the two species.

During mating season, the powerful male fur seals swim ashore to establish territories first, and their preferred breeding sites include rocky islands, boulder or pebble beaches.joojourneys_brunyisland_furseals

joojourneys_brunyisland_blackfacedcomorant由于羽毛没有防水的特质,捕鱼后的黑脸鸬鹚,喜欢张着翅膀,在岩石壁上晾干羽毛。

The Black-faced Cormorant is the least common of Australia’s five species of cormorant. It is also a fully marine cormorant.

These birds are found in large flocks. They feed on fishes and have to sit on the shore with their wings spread after fishing so as to dry their non-waterproof feathers. How cute!

June and July make up the whale-sighting season in Tasmania. We were hoping to spot some whales but luck wasn’t on our side. Another reason for us to revisit Tasmania then 🙂

How to get to Tasminia

I flew from Melbourne, via Virgin Australia, to Hobart. The flight time was about 75 minutes and it cost around 214AUD for an economy seat and one 23kg check-in bag.

Tasmania’s great for self-drive itinerary. However, July ain’t the best season as it’s slightly gloomy and rainy.

We experienced a day in Hobart with the highest rainfall in two years! Oh wells.
